Macmillan Dictionary for Children First Multimedia Edition October 1991 This file contains some last minute information about installing and using the Multimedia Edition of the Dictionary. We suggest reading all of this file before installing the dictionary. Software Version 1.20 - July 29, 1992 Using the dictionary on a machine with 2 megabytes of memory. Although the dictionary will run in only 2 megabytes of memory, like many Windows and Multimedia applications it will run quite slowly. We recommend that at least 4 megabytes of memory be installed in the machine. In standard mode with 2 megabytes of memory, "out of memory" messages may be encountered after using the dictionary for a while. In particular, "out of memory" messages may occur while playing some of the games. If this message appears, exit the dictionary and restart it. The games may then be reentered directly from the opening screen and played for some time before the error message appears again. We recommend that the 386 Enhanced mode of Windows be used. There are a couple of features that will definitely not work on a 2 megabyte machine. The opening animated title sequence will not play; the main dictionary screen appears instead. The Guided Tour will start but probably will not finish to the end. To get an overview of what is in the dictionary, print out the file called TOUR.TXT on the CD. This file can be used as a script for a tour through the dictionary. Also, Help provides guidance through the dictionary and can be used at any point. Video Display Mode The Multimedia Dictionary uses only the standard VGA 16 colors and will therefore run on any VGA monitor. We have found that the dictionary runs much faster using a 16-color VGA driver instead of a 256-color driver. If the dictionary is running slowly, try switching to a plain VGA driver. Also, the Opening Animated Title Sequence will not play if the machine is running in 256-color mode. Zak Animation Sequences Pausing If you are using a CD ROM drive that does not operate at the required transfer rate of 150K/bytes per second, the animation sequences will have pauses in the visual and sound playback. If, during installation, "yes" was chosen for the option that uses some of the hard disk for the dictionary, the animation files will run off the hard disk which should eliminate the problem. In case of difficulty Remember that if you have any problems or questions you can call our Technical Support group at 800-342- 1338. And Finally We encourage you to fill out and mail back the registration card that is enclosed with the CD. Registered users will be notified of upgrades and future editions of the dictionary and will also receive any additional information or tips that we develop after the product has shipped.
